Some of the lesser Rougon-Macquart haven’t been translated since the Vizetelly translations. The translation I read of The Kill was by Arthur Goldhammer, but there’s another out there by Brian Nelson. I’ve read other translations by Nelson and they were very good.

It’s the story of a woman trapped by society and the men in her life–along the lines of Anna Karenina and Madame Bovary. It was SO good, I was a bit shocked that the book never appeared on any of the many reading lists I’d read. Perhaps I just read the wrong lists.

Pot Luck is set in a Parisian boarding house and is really an examination of the morality of its bourgeois residents. At times it reads like a French bedroom farce. Of all the Rougon-Macquart I’ve read so far, this was the most enjoyable.

I finished The Masterpiece (number 14) recently.
