I would lie if I said I’m not glad that secularism advances in USA.

  2. Eva Jina says:

It isn’t difficult to “imagine no religion.” Imagine the Soviet Union, Red China and North Korea. Imagine the genocide of tens of millions of innocent people.

I can imagine the genocide of tens of millions of innocent people with and without religion.

I think serious ethics is what we need.

Besides environmentalism, it seems they are flocking to “universalist” type churches, more theme and less dogma. Those Catholic priests really gummed things up but people still need opiates.

    Troutsky:

Off-topic here, but you mention opiates… When Marx coined that phrase, “religion is the opiate of the masses,” just what did he mean?

Did he mean that it was a stupefying narcotic that prevented them from discerning the truth? Or, taken in context, did he mean that it functioned as opium did for workers, to assuage the pain of their harsh existence?

Of course, it could be both, but I tend to think the original context favors the second reading. And that is more of a Pascalian view. One that recognizes the facts but retains a sort of empathy for the valid logic of the victim.
